Internal Frame Backpacks
Going outdoors camping, mountain climbing, exploring or maybe even go hiking for few days will require some gears, tools probably some small equipment.
The stuff that we take with us needs to be packed neatly in bags. Some use duffel bags because of flexibility but the problem is it needs to be held by the hands. When outdoors just on foot for a few days, especially in the woods or forest, it is important to have the hands free. It is more important when you need to climb mountains or cliffs. Also, carrying weight with the hands will be more tiring. This is a reason to do some innovation in carrying packs, as what Greg Lowe did in 1967. Internal frame backpacks are backpacks that have some “chassis” inside them. The internal frame will conform to persons back in general.
The small internal frame integrated with the material or cloth of the backpack is like a “chassis”. It is made of metal or plastic, or a mix of both. The frame will make a good fit at the back of the one who wears them. The backpack will have a good “feel” once a person wears it. The frame has some series of straps so that items put in them will be fixed in place to have good weight distribution. With the backpack almost forming part of the body, it will be easy to detect shifting load weight. The person wearing them will be able to immediately adjust as needed. This is important for one’s balance and footing while walking. The inside, with the straps could be webbing loops that would help secure large items. There would be no way to strap or lash on the outside as the frame is fully integrated within the backpack.
The internal framed backpacks snugly fit at the back of person and will cause more perspiration on at the back. There is practically no ventilation between the backpack and the back of one who wears them. The snug fit though helps a lot on upper body movement because of the ideal weight distribution. The good distribution of the weight will put less strain on the back while walking or for movement over rocky terrain. Even with skiing, it will provide outstanding balance. There are different options for capacity of backpacks. Of course, a smaller backpack will be what a skier would use.
For proper weight distribution, you should be able to know the activities you would be into.
If it would be mostly for walking, the heavier load should be near the top. For activities that will take you away from regular trails, the best option is to put heavy items near the middle. It will provide better balance if you need to jump some. With top load heavy when jumping down, the weight could pull you down head first. The advantage of internal frame backpacks over external frame backpacks is when you are moving in thickly forested places. External frames could get snagged in vines or branches of small trees or bushes. The two advantages it would offer is sufficient ventilation at the back and allowing for heavier load to be carried. Internal frame backpacks are now preferred for ease of use and balance.
